PROJECT GIGA RHINO

The 12 MW Rhino battery will be the most powerfull energy storage project in the Netherlands. The energy stored in the Rhino battery on an annual basis can be compared with a total electricity consumption of around 5.000 households per year: A GIGA battery!

The Rhino battery will be installed in 2020 at the Wageningen University & Research test center in Lelystad, right next to the Neushoorntocht wind farm.

The primary purpose of this battery is to put a larger amount of renewable energy on the electricity grid. We do this by using the battery in such a way that switching off sustainable energy production is limited. In addition, the electricity grid is stabilized using the battery. The Rhino battery thus makes an important contribution in reducing CO2 emissions. Energy storage is the missing link in the energy transition.

Recognition by Dutch Government

The importance of the Rhino project for the energy transition has been recognized by the Dutch government by awarding a grant to the project. A crowdfunding promotion has been started.

For the Rhino battery, the impact of the purchase, use and re-use / dismantling of the project has been analyzed and weighed. A white paper has been written on this and is available on request.

Track record with batteries

The GIGA Rhino battery will be delivered by NEC Energy Solutions (NEC ES). NEC ES develops and produces advanced battery systems and has extensive experience in the field of large-scale energy storage.
