GIGA Storage builds €20 mln battery

Giga Storage, a company from Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, is going to build a €20 mln battery near Lelystad. The battery will have a capacity of 24 megawatts and should be put into operation in two years. Annually, the battery will store 30,000 megawatt hours of electricity. That is comparable to the energy consumption per year of about 9000 households.

In a few years, Giga Storage is aiming for a 300-megawatt battery. The three-year-old company wants to become “the Vopak for electricity,” says managing director Ruud Nijs. Vopak is a listed tank storage company: in ports it has terminals for storing oil and chemicals. So Giga Storage wants to become big in batteries.
